2009-03-28(Sat): ハロルド・ワシントン図書館の訪問記 - ACADEMIC RESOURCE GUIDE (ARG)

これも昨日の記録。この日は朝から市内にある

・Harold Washington Library Center（ハロルド・ワシントン図書館）

へ。ここは"Largest municiple, public, ciculating library in the country" (FACTS ABOUT YOUR CENTRAL LIBRARY) とのこと。10階建てで外壁は花崗岩という立派な造りだ。あいにくデジタルカメラのバッテリーが切れ、写真を一枚も撮れなかったことが返す返すも悔やまれる。建物の様子などは、図書館のサイトを参考にしてほしい。

以下、非常に感心した2つの事例を紹介しておこう。

1つ目はメインエントランスから館内に入る廊下の壁にシカゴ図書館全体のMission Statementが明記されていること。全文は、

に記されているが、ここにも掲げておこう。

We welcome and support

最後の"read", "learn", "discover"の3セットがいい。

もう一つ印象的だったのが、館内の壁のいたるところに書きこまれた本や図書館に関する言葉の数々。これも写真を撮って来れれば良かったのだが……。ライブラリアンに館内全体でいくつかの書き込みがあるのかを尋ねたのだが、まだ始めたばかりの試みでのあり、正確な数は把握していないということだった。さらに引用句をまとめた資料もないということなので、結局すべてを書き写してきた。以下の紹介しよう。なお、単語の正確性は保障しないが、改行箇所はすべて反映してある。

Popular Libraryがある1階には最も多くの引用句がある。

Children's Libraryはあるものの、面積の大部分は吹き抜けになっている2階には引用句は見られず、Computer CommonsとNewspapers and General Periodicalsがある3階へ。ここには以下の引用句があった。

4階にはなく、Municipal Reference CollectionとGovernment Publicationsの5階には、

と続く。まだ始めたばかりということだが、図書館という空間の演出方法としてはなかなか興味深い。
